Cultural Competency Training for Physicians and Health Care Providers

Here is another article that outlines the evaluation of cultural competency training. This time, the article outlines the development and eventual evaluation of cultural competency training for physicians and health care providers. Click the link below and read the ENTIRE article. In addition, I would like you all to view this article with a critical eye . . . start thinking like the budding research evaluators I know you are. Remember, you evaluate things everyday. You evaluate storylines on your favorite tv shows. You evaluate new CD's by your favorite artists. You evaluate new menu items at your favorite restaurants. This task is no different . . . however, this time, you are being asked to evaluate information that could effect you professionally.

Let me know what you think.

I definetely think cultural competency training is a must in any profession, but especially in the "helping profession." I first realized the impact of this when I was working at the local hospital. We actually had to go online and print off for the doctor's what to say or we had to get one of the children to do this. It was very sad & confusing, especially to the children. Ever since then I have wanted to take a course in Spanish, but when??? Maybe when I graduate. I just want to be able to serve my clients the best to my ability and not have to depend or find an interpreter.

I agree with both Stu and T.Morgan. It would be interesting to see how the students did after 6 months and not just after completing the course. I feel they need time to process the idea and interact with patients before taking the evaluation. Also not speaking the language & understanding could definetely produce disastrous results for the patient and family, as well as staff. Faye
Josh - think I forgot to put my name on the one I just sent. Thanks!

Conteria Williams, original post to Cultural Competency Training.

I strongly agree that cultural competency training is a must in any profession. Because, if one is not properly trained on the correct way to deal with issues one can most certainly not deal with it appropriately. As a social worker, I'm looking forward to receiving additional information that will keep me current with the times.

Conteria Williams, response to Faye

It would be beneficial to see just how the students did after completing six months. I also agree that with not speaking the correct language as well as understanding about different cultures one can place a strain on the families. Therefore, without having knowledge of the different cultures customs and values on can do more harm than good.

I think cultural competency is must for almost every profession not just social workers. I believe it to be very beneficial for those who are especially in the social service field to have training seminars focusing on cultural competence.

In response to faye: I also agree that is would be interesting to see how the students did after several months...not just directly after.

I am one who always strives for cultural competency. I didn't get to view the entire article, but I can still imagine why this is so significant not just for pharmacy students, but for anyone entering a helping profession.
You have to be able to work for and with your clients, even those who are different from yourself, and what's interesting is that you may not encounter these people until you are in the workforce which is why I think the course that was offered is a wonderful introduction.

I think we all agree on the signficance of cultural competence.

I agree with Faye about how important cultural competence training is, especially in the helping professions. I mean really, how are we going to adequately help people of different cultures and belief systems if we do not know what those differences are or how they affect the process.
